Start-Stop vs. Squeeze Technique: Which Is Better for Premature Ejaculation?

Both behavioral techniques delay ejaculation — but they work differently. Compare how they feel, when to use each, and why start-stop is the better default for most men.

The start-stop and squeeze techniques are the two classic behavioral methods for premature ejaculation. Both were designed to interrupt the ejaculatory reflex near the point of no return, but they do it differently — and for most men, one is clearly easier to apply. Here is the comparison and a recommendation.

Start-stop: pause and wait

In start-stop you stimulate until you reach a high level of arousal, then stop all stimulation and wait 15–45 seconds until the urge fades, then resume. It requires no special hand movement — just the discipline to stop early enough. See the full start-stop guide.

Squeeze: press and hold

In the squeeze technique (introduced by Masters and Johnson in 1970) you firmly squeeze the glans for several seconds when the urge appears, which temporarily reduces erection intensity and the ejaculatory urge. It works, but it can be awkward to apply during partnered sex and interrupts the rhythm more noticeably.

Which is better?

For most men, start-stop is the better default. The pause is natural, easy to time with a metronome, and transfers cleanly to partnered sex — you can simply change rhythm instead of stopping. The squeeze technique is a useful backup when a pause alone is not enough, and some men prefer its immediate physical effect. You can also combine them: pause first, and only squeeze if the urge does not subside within a few seconds.

What actually moves the needle
